Things We All Do, But Never Say We Do

We all have those dirty little secrets we don’t want people to know about. Things we try to avoid others from noticing simply because they’re embarrassing or weird.

Sometimes we pay too much attention to our behavior and the way we react to certain situations. Once we set our attention on ourselves, we realize that there are so many weird things we do every day that probably a lot of people do too. The thing is that nothing is ever mentioned about them –they’re like the actions of the silence.

There is no one out there free of odd habits or some type of atypical behavior. Everybody is weird and there is nothing wrong with it. In fact, that weird part of ourselves is one of the many things that make us who we are. Let’s embrace it!

Today, I have decided to break the silence and make you say “I do that too.” Here are some of the things we all do, but never say we do.

1. Forgetting how to walk

Let’s say you are walking home. Suddenly, you pay attention to the movement of your legs. You see how your feet go step by step and how your arms move accordingly. You become so self-conscious of your own walk that you somehow get distracted and lose all motor skills.

It’s kind of embarrassing — particularly when you’re walking in public — because you feel like you’re going to fall and everybody is going to see you.

2. Drinking just a sip

Haven’t you ever felt like you want to drink juice or milk, but you only want just a little bit? So instead of serving yourself a glass of juice or milk, you drink directly from the bottle. You are not the only one.

Drinking from the bottle might be disgusting and unhygienic but let’s keep it real, everybody does it. There is no point in serving yourself a glass of juice if you are not going to drink it entirely. And there is no point in getting a glass dirty just for a sip.

3. Being on a diet

Being on a diet is probably one of the hardest things to do. At the beginning, you think you are strong enough; no matter what you have in front of you, you are not going to eat.

Then your family or friends randomly decide to go to one of your favorite restaurants. What are you going to do now?

Some of you would stay strong and decline the invitation. Some would go to their favorite restaurant, order some miserable dish, and hope it tastes good. And some of you would break the diet because it is just “one time.”

4. Picking your nose

People do this even if they say they don’t. Sometimes you just got to take those bogies out of your nose because you feel like you literally can’t breathe. It is almost like the bogies are obstructing the pathway of air and you are unable to move your nose like you normally do because you feel there is a wall of mucus that is limiting you.

Some people might eat the bogies after they take them out of their nose. This is actually pretty disgusting and society always tries to prevent this type of habit. On the other hand, according to an article published in the journal of the American Society for Microbiology, eating bogies can be good for your health. Since mucus is rich in good bacteria, once ingested they could prevent and/or defend your body from respiratory infections, stomach ulcers, and even HIV. Also, bogies prevent other bacteria from sticking to your teeth. (Click here to read more “Eating bogies is good for teeth and overall health, scientists conclude”)

5. Stalking people on Facebook

You met someone new and you want to know more about him/her, your crush is dating someone else, your ex has a girlfriend already, your cousin is getting married, you see a picture and the person next to your friend is hot. No matter the reason or the purpose, we all stalk people on Facebook.

Facebook is the online platform that gives us the opportunity to know people even if we don’t know them. Sometimes stalking can be difficult and we have to rely on other social media platforms — Instagram, Twitter, etc. — but our first option will always be Facebook.

6. Practicing conversations in front of the mirror

Whenever you have to speak in front of people — a presentation, for example — you practice what you are going to say in front of the mirror. It’s a way to evaluate your own discourse.

For instance, you have to say something really important to your loved ones. Usually, you think and analyze the way you are going to tell them the news. You stand in front of the mirror and let the words flow. If you don’t like what you say, you’ll do it again until you find the right way. We all do it, it’s not just you.

7. Stretching to sniff your armpits

Sometimes the armpits situation can get ugly — particularly if you are in a public place.

This can be a very uncomfortable situation. You smell something weird and you want to know if it’s you, but there are so many people around you that you have to act naturally. How can you do that? Well, stretching seems to be a very convenient option.

If you stretch your arms up and move your head slightly to one side, you are going to have the chance to quickly sniff your armpits and check if everything is alright or … a total disaster.

8. Pretending to text

You do this whenever you feel like you don’t belong. Let’s say you are at the mall with a friend. Suddenly, your friend runs into someone you don’t know and they start talking about something you have no idea of.

The only way you seem to find to escape the awkward situation is using your phone. You don’t actually text anyone or do anything on it. You just pretend you are using it until the awkward moment is over.

Conclusion

I’m pretty sure there are thousands of things we all do but are scared or embarrassed to admit. I hope you have realized that you are not alone even if you consider yourself weird. Once again, we are all weird and there is nothing wrong with it.
